King Kavan, ruler of the kingdom of Decius, wants to kill all vampires in the land. What he hasn’t reckoned on is his second-in-command running off with one of the winged creatures or that he would fall in love with the beautiful Harben. Keeping Harben locked in his tower, with orders to maim the vampire’s wings should he escape, isn’t conducive to receiving Harben’s love in turn, but what happens when Kavan’s forbidden feelings are tested? Would he save Harben’s life at the expense of his own?

Some minor spoilers ahead.I fell in love with the idea of this book, and whatever expectations I had – it exceeded them all. Yes, this is a dark read. Human characters here are controversial and more evil than kind, but in my opinion, they redeemed themselves, or at least started doing it. Especially Kavan. He was violent, cruel, heartless, scary to death. I was wondering how he would ever fall in love, how he could even know what it is. But he did. I think there is a lot information about Kavan that wasn’t revealed. Like, why did he make eliminating vampires his sense of life? Who were his parents? Why did he grow up into such a cold and unfeeling person? I sense a tragedy there, in his past. Tragedy that could explain Kavan’s viciousness and hatred. I also got a feeling that he wasn’t fully in his right mind and he suffered from that. Maybe now that he found his happiness with Harben, he’ll finally start getting better mentally.
Harben was wonderful. He was both strong and sensitive, he wasn’t forced to stay in the castle, he did it on his own free will, because of the strange feelings he developed toward Kavan. Their romance was dark, brutal and beautiful, bordering on obsession. I couldn’t even breathe properly while reading, the emotions raged like crazy! Near the end I wanted to cry. Kavan did a lot of terrible things, but he was absolutely lost and broken after Harben rejected him. What he did, said, *felt* after the rebellion shocked me. I’m fascinated with him, I would really love for this book to be longer, so we could learn more about his background… because still under the façade of cruelty and coldness there was a lost, vulnerable man-child who didn’t need kingdom, who just wanted to be loved.
Secondary characters’ story, Lucius and Eachan’s, intrigued me as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Usually I require more time and more positive interactions between characters to believe in their feelings, but strangely, even a few pages – after torture nonetheless! – were enough for me here. The relationship between these two is spontaneous and intuitive, and genuine – at least I felt it was.
Of course in real life things would probably be different. I doubt any of us could ever fall in love with the person who tortured us so violently, but we’re talking about non-humans here — they are vampires who are many years old, who see the world differently. So yes, their story and their romances captured me. I love Kavan and Harben and I’d love to know more about their future. I’m sure they’ll be happy, though. Along with Lucius and Eachan.
Wonderful dark book.

On the Wings of a Vampire edition by Scarlet Blackwell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The scourge of the kingdom of Decius, according to King Kavan, is the insidious, soulless vampires who prey on the innocent. Kavan and his trusted chief of truth seeker, Lucius have devoted their lives to ridding the kingdom of the killers no matter the cost to those who are charged to hunt them down.
Recently Kavan and Lucius were fortunate to capture an older vampire named Harben and his human lover Ophion. Kavan intends to break Harben while learning as much as he can about the vile creatures who survive on human blood. It would be extremely helpful to gain new insight on them and perhaps find out where others of his kind hide.
Known as a brutal and vicious King, Kavan sets out to destroy the proud beauty, but his plans begin to backfire almost immediately. Kavan becomes captivated with his winged enemy. After all the years of killing vampire prisoners, Kavan is falling under Harben's spell. Meanwhile, Lucius has captured another named Eachan and though the vampire is tortured mercilessly Lucius is unable to put him to death. Both men are faced with a dilemma because after years of committing horrible atrocities upon the undead they are falling for the very ones they are sworn to kill. If anyone else finds out their lives will be forfeit as well, King or not. Loving the enemy was never supposed to happen.
On the Wings of the Vampire is a gritty, sometimes violent romance which offers no apology for the plot or the characters actions. During most of the story Kavan is completely without a shred of decency or mercy for the enemy while Lucius is his able henchman who comes up with inhumane methods of murder. It is ironic that the supposed `undead' thaw their frozen hearts. There is a great deal of cruelty as well as sadistic behavior, the worst being Kavan's nonconsensual sexual encounter with Harben. On the Wings of the Vampire is most definitely more malevolent than other romances. This won't be for everyone, though redemption comes for those with patience. Original and savage.
