In The Mysterious Stranger, a sleepy Austrian village is visited by Satan, an angel who is the nephew of the more famous, evil Satan. Satan (acting as a mouthpiece for Twain) objectively points out how the human race is defined by fear, lies, betrayal, suspicion, and cowardice. Twain presents us with the burning of an innocent woman as a witch, the abandonment of a kind family by their friends, and a drunkard beating his loyal dog until the poor animal’s eye is smashed out. Towards the end, Satan has this bombshell he doesn’t exist, and neither does God--how could there be a greater power when humanity is as sickening and loathsome as it is?

Stupid Amazon puts the reviews of a bunch of different editions all on one reviews page. So to be clear about the edition i'm reviewing, it's the $3.99 paperback with a red rectangular center with the swirlies around it. I like it a lot. The text is just as I remember it. The print is large enough and easy on the eyes. It is basically just 'The Mysterious Stranger' with a few 2 page stories tacked on in the end. I bought this for a friend and wanted to make sure the print wasn't tiny and uncomfortable to read, and it wasn't. It's a nice little book, a sturdy largish paperback that is well worth the 3.99. As for the story itself - utterly engaging and profound. Don't miss it.

This edition restores the text to a more faithful representation of Twain's actual text and the result is darker, far more metaphysical version of the novel than Albert Bigelow Paine's spurious edition. This is the one to get!
If you only think of Tom Sawyer when you think of Mark Twain...you've not read the Mysterious Stranger. Deep, dark and metaphysical.
Gerat stories, specially the third one. Several interesting ideas in all of them and great quotes from Twain. Hihgly recommended.
Twain's book, written late in life, reveals his cynicism about society and humanity. No. 44 is also a mind-bender because some of the concepts it explores are very complex. It's rather different from his more famous works; if you're looking for something like Adventures of Tom Sawyer or Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, this book may not be for you. Although No. 44 does include some of Twain's trademark humor, it's also quite dark. I found myself feeling rather depressed at the end of this novel, but I did enjoy certain instances of Twain's wit--such as his comments about cats. Overall, No. 44 gives you an interesting glimpse into Twain's mind. Just remember that it's dark in there!
Most definitely one of my all-time favorite books! Reading this work is like floating down a lazy river trailing your fingers in the water. Its pithy stuff this particular story, but told with such ease and sure-footedness, it requires no effort from the reader. How can that be?

What a pleasure to read. I have no doubt but that I will revisit this story periodically throughout my lifetime. Thank you, Samuel Clemens!
Mark Twain at his best and that's better than almost anybody. I love his paragraph on the god myth at the end of the mysterious stranger which depicts the silliness of the creator story. His common sense and humour are outstanding in this story as it always is and it was a joy to read.
This edition of this book, with the green and gray cover, published by Classic Books International, is NOT the same version as the edition it is linked to. Buy the copy that has the cream and green cover and is published by the University of California Press, the cover shown in the edition of the book. This is an egregious mistake on the part of the site. The two versions are very different, with many different characters and a different setting.I told a help desk person 2 months ago but this has not yet been remedied. DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION IF YOU WANT TO READ THE AUTHORIZED VERSION OF THIS BOOK!
